The Azerbaijan Democracy and Development Party has joined 14 other political and civil groups opposed to the Islamic Republic in signing the “Minimum Human Rights Principles for the Transition Period.”
The document was presented at the “Human Rights Crisis in Iran” conference in Oslo, hosted by Iran Human Rights. It sets out a number of shared principles for a possible transition toward a democratic system based on human rights and equal rights for all citizens.
Among the main points are the abolition of the death penalty, the release of all political prisoners, protection of civil and political freedoms, equality before the law, freedom of the media, and free and fair elections.
The document also emphasizes equal participation of women, ethnic communities, religious minorities, and other marginalized groups in the transition process. Other principles include the separation of religion and government, an independent judiciary, a constitution developed through a democratic process, and opposition to political or ideological retaliation.
The document has been signed by a total of 15 political and civil organizations.
